ABN promotes industrial decarbonization in Medina del Campo with support from PERTE

ABN promotes industrial decarbonization in Medina del Campo with support from PERTE

The Galician company ABN Pipe Systems has received €3.6 million from the PERTE Industrial Decarbonization program to modernize its Medina del Campo plant, reduce emissions, and move toward a more sustainable industry.

Promotion of PERTE for a sustainable industry

ABN Pipe Systems, a company of the Galician group ABN dedicated to the manufacture of polymer pipe systems and accessories for construction, civil engineering, and industry, with headquarters in A Coruña and a production plant in Medina del Campo, has obtained €3.6 million in aid from the Strategic Project for Economic Recovery and Transformation (PERTE) for Industrial Decarbonization.

This finance, from the European Next Generation EU funds, forms part of line 1 of the PERTE aimed at the decarbonization of industrial processes, and represents approximately half of the total investment of €7.2 million that ABN will allocate to a comprehensive energy efficiency and sustainability plan at its factory in Valladolid. The Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Tourism granted this aid with the aim of implementing state-of-the-art industrial equipment at the plant, ensuring the highest quality standards at every stage of the production process and accelerating the transition to a sustainable industry.

Public authorities have emphasized the importance of this project. The Minister of Industry, Jordi Hereu, highlighted that initiatives such as this one strengthen industrial competitiveness and employment, demonstrating the government’s commitment to industrial sectors in their green transition. For his part, the Government Delegate in Castile and León, Nicanor Sen, during his visit to the factory in 2025, stated: “I am sure that ABN will achieve its decarbonization goals thanks to its focus on a sustainable vision.” Sen also highlighted the prominent role of ABN Pipe Systems in the economy of Medina del Campo, as a driver of employment and local development thanks to its commitment to sustainable industrial innovation.

Objectives and measures of the decarbonization project

The first initiative consists of implementing a recycling line to make use of plastic waste from vehicle shredding (Automotive Shredder Residue, ASR), which currently tends to end up in landfills or incinerators. This system will allow these materials to be reincorporated into the production process, transforming them into new recycled plastics that replace virgin fossil-based raw materials. It is estimated that with the RECPlastic project, the plant will achieve savings of around 5,000 tons of CO₂ thanks to the reduction in emissions associated with the circular management of this waste.

Eco-design of pipes using recycled materials

The second line of work focuses on the eco-design of plastic pipes to promote decarbonization from the design stage. Specifically, ABN will research and develop new polymer compounds based on recycled materials, with the aim of manufacturing pipes that are more sustainable and have a lower environmental impact than current systems. Increasing the proportion of recycled material in products will reduce emissions from the design stage and create synergies with the new internal recycling process, with an estimated reduction of around 969 tons of CO₂ thanks to this measure.

Energy optimization in pipe extrusion

The third line focuses on optimizing the extrusion process at the factory. ABN will incorporate a new extrusion line for the production of small-diameter pipes (between 20 and 63 mm) using state-of-the-art technology. This advanced equipment will reduce energy consumption in the manufacture of these pipes by up to 70%, significantly improving process efficiency. As a result, the company estimates savings of approximately 52 tons of CO₂ linked to lower energy and raw material use at this stage of production.

Plant modernization and green job creation

With the help of PERTE, ABN Pipe Systems is modernizing its Medina del Campo plant, which opened in 2008, to make it a benchmark for sustainable Industry 4.0. The factory, located in the Medina ON Business Park, covers nearly 100,000 m² (more than 18,000 m² of production and warehouse space) and has an advanced R&D&I laboratory for materials testing. Investment in new high-efficiency equipment and processes will not only reduce emissions but also consolidate the future of this plant in the town, increasing its competitiveness and technological capacity. ABN integrates cutting-edge technology in both the laboratory and the production lines, reinforcing its position at the forefront of the sector.

At the same time, the company’s growth is already reflected in employment. In 2024, ABN Pipe Systems expanded its workforce from 136 to 175 employees, of whom around 100 work at the Medina plant. The company expects this growth to “continue to increase over the coming months,” driven by new circular economy and energy efficiency initiatives. The creation of these highly skilled green jobs contributes to the socioeconomic development of Medina del Campo, in line with the PERTE’s objectives of promoting high value-added employment in the ecological transition. The authorities have highlighted this project as an example of sustainable industrial innovation in Castile and León and a driving force for the green reindustrialization of the region.

ABN Pipe Systems’ commitment to sustainable innovation

This decarbonization project is fully aligned with ABN Pipe Systems’ sustainability and innovation strategy. Founded in 1988, the company has positioned itself as a solid and socially responsible company with a clear vision for the future. Its goal is to be a reference in the development of thermoplastic composites and innovative piping systems designed for a circular economy, thus leading the transformation towards a sustainable industry in the piping sector. In addition to PERTE, ABN participates in collaborative R&D initiatives: for example, it is developing a new system of soundproof pipes based on sustainable solutions in collaboration with the University of Valladolid and Cellmat Technologies, a project that has received nearly €1.2 million in funding from the State Research Plan within the PRTR.

With concrete actions such as the implementation of a pioneering recycling line, the incorporation of recycled materials in its products, and the energy optimization of its processes, ABN Pipe Systems reinforces its commitment to innovation in pipes and industrial decarbonization. The company is thus advancing in its mission to offer solutions for construction and industry that combine high quality and respect for the environment, contributing to emission reduction targets and strengthening its competitiveness in the global sustainable industry market.
