How an ABN custom manifold is made: from drawing to pressure test

ABN custom manifolds with different branch and connection layouts, illustrating custom manifold manufacturing.

ABN custom manifold manufacturing starts with the requirements of a specific installation. The manifold distributes or collects fluid, and its length, branches and connections must match the drawing and operating conditions of the project.

At ABN, the process starts with a pipe and a configuration agreed with the customer. Workshop fabrication prepares the assembly before delivery to site, where positioning, connections and checks on the completed installation are still required.

1. Custom manifold manufacturing: drawing and connections

Before cutting, establish the number of outlets, their diameters, centre distances and orientation. The fluid, operating pressure and temperature must also be specified.

A dimensioned drawing avoids leaving essential decisions until installation. Include:

  • Equipment connections.
  • Valve and maintenance clearances.
  • Any access restrictions in the plant room.

2. Cut the pipe to the agreed length

The pipe is cut to the agreed dimensions. Its length must accommodate the outlets and the end connections, with sufficient space for assembly.

The material and configuration are selected for the intended service. The feasibility of the assembly is reviewed before the design is finalised.

3. Machine the outlets and weld the branches

Outlets are machined individually in their specified positions. Each branch should correspond to the relevant circuit on the installation drawing.

The branches are then welded using the applicable procedure. Workshop fabrication allows preparation to be organised, components to be held securely and joints to be made under controlled conditions.

4. Check the assembly before supply

Manufacturing includes a pressure test to check the manifold before delivery. The scope and conditions of verification must match the assembly and the order.

This check does not replace testing of the completed installation. Connections made on site and commissioning require their own checks.

5. Prepare for delivery and installation

ABN manufactures manifolds in the stated DN 63 to DN 630 range, with configuration subject to project assessment. When requesting a manifold, confirm the dimensional designation and connections of each component.

Before delivery, review access, handling and supports. Explore manifolds and special parts and our comparison of prefabricated manifolds and on-site fabrication.

6. What the drawing should define before production

The drawing for a custom manifold should identify each circuit without leaving the outlet orientation open to interpretation. Match the outlets to the equipment they serve and check that dimensions use a common reference point. A photograph of the plant room can help explain its layout, but it cannot replace the dimensions needed to manufacture the assembly.

Where insulation, valves or other components surround a connection, allow for their space in the design. Also consider how the assembly will enter the room and which areas need to remain accessible after installation. Resolving these details before custom manifold manufacturing begins helps avoid a component that matches its drawing but cannot be fitted or maintained in its intended position.

7. From workshop testing to checks on the installed network

Workshop testing and on-site verification address different stages. The first concerns the manufactured assembly; the second must also consider the connections and other components added during installation. When preparing the order, agree what information will accompany the delivery and who will check the assembly on arrival. Keep that information alongside the agreed drawing.

Before connecting the manifold, compare the supplied assembly with the approved dimensions and the equipment already installed. If a connection or dimension has changed, discuss the adaptation before altering the component. This keeps a clear link between design, manufacturing and commissioning, without assuming that a workshop pressure test covers checks that belong to the completed installation.
