Skilled labour shortages on site: reducing tasks with pre-insulated pipes

Installer wearing a blue helmet working on the valves of an ABN INSU PLUS pre-insulated pipe network.

Skilled labour shortages on site make planning harder when different tasks need different teams. If pipe installation and insulation take place separately, progress also depends on coordinating those teams.

ABN INSU PLUS pre-insulated pipes move part of this work to the factory. The aim is to reduce on-site tasks and organise the installation team’s work more effectively while meeting the project’s technical requirements.

1. Skilled labour shortages on site: review the tasks

A system insulated on site requires pipe installation, insulation and external protection where specified. Thermal insulation is sometimes called lagging; these terms do not necessarily describe separate operations.

Effective planning starts with knowing what each work package includes, who will carry it out and when it can begin. Changes of team, access restrictions and equipment availability can create delays.

2. Move pipe and fitting insulation to the factory

ABN INSU PLUS components are supplied with insulation and external protection as defined by the system. This reduces the need to apply those layers to each pipe section after installation.

The benefit is easier to achieve when the supply includes the necessary fittings. Covering only straight sections leaves tasks outstanding at elbows, branches and interfaces.

3. Plan the work that remains on site

Prefabrication does not remove installation work. Plan the following in accordance with the applicable procedure:

  • Supports.
  • Joints.
  • Finishing.
  • Insulation continuity.
  • Installation checks.

Defining these operations before delivery supports realistic resource allocation. The team must understand the system and have the necessary tools and documentation.

4. Reduce waiting without assuming a fixed programme

Moving operations to the factory can reduce coordination between trades for those tasks. The outcome depends on the route, diameters, number of joints and site organisation.

Manufacturing and delivery lead times must also be included. Compare the complete programme and the hours required for each stage, rather than pipe installation time alone.

5. Compare the options for your project

Prepare a schedule of pipe lengths, fittings and operating conditions, alongside the planned insulation and protection tasks. This shows which operations move to the factory and which remain on site.

Explore our pre-insulated piping systems and the differences compared with on-site insulation.

6. A practical way to plan a plant room

Consider a plant room where pipe installation must be coordinated with equipment, supports and maintenance access. If insulation is applied afterwards, another operation must be scheduled along the same route. Pre-insulated components change that sequence, although connections and the finishing work specified by the system still need to be completed on site.

Skilled labour shortages on site make reviewing this sequence before ordering particularly useful. Define which components will arrive prepared, where the joints will be made and which tasks need access after the network is installed. Then assign each operation to the team responsible. This example helps structure the programme; it cannot predict a saving in hours without measurements for the actual project.

7. What to include when comparing resources

Record the hours allowed for each operation and the dependencies between trades. Distinguish the installation of pipe lengths, jointing, remaining insulation work and final checks. Include delivery lead times and access to any handling equipment. This prevents a reduction in site tasks from hiding preparation that still needs to happen before the materials arrive.

To make the decision, compare both options using the same scope and identify the real constraint on progress. If access to the room or delivery of an item of equipment is causing the delay, a different pipe system does not remove that dependency. Assess ABN INSU PLUS within the full installation programme and alongside the resources available to complete it.
